Biography

Qingqiang Yang was born in Bazhong, Sichuan Province, China on February 5th1986. Yang is now a graduate student at Columbia University. Yang was awarded the Degree of Bachelor of Engineering in recognition of his successful completion of the 4-year programmed Automation courses in South China University of Technology (SCUT), Guangzhou, China on July 1st, 2009.During his undergraduate study in SCUT, he participated in Student Research Program (SRP) and 100 Steps Climbing Plan of SCUT. He served as Student Assistant of Industrial Research Institute, SCUT from Oct.2006 to Dec.2008. As a result of his research work, he has three papers accepted by international conferences indexed by EI and ISTP. His previous and current research interests include: wireless communications, robotics, image processing, pattern recognition, algorithms &computer simulation.Mr. Yang was granted China National Scholarship in October, 2006; and Yorkshire Scholarship for Excellent Undergraduates in Oct. 2008.

As one of the fundamental approaches of digital image processing, image segmentation is the premise of feature extraction and pattern recognition. This paper enumerates and reviews main image segmentation algorithms, then presents basic evaluation methods for them, and finally discusses the prospect of image segmentation. Some valuable characteristics of image segmentation come out based on a large number of comparative experiments.
