Tumour Delineation using Statistical Properties of The Breast US Images and Vector Quantization based Clustering Algorithms

By H. B. Kekre Pravin Shrinath

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2013.11.01, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2013

Breast cancer is most common and leading cause of death among women. With improvement in the imaging modalities it is possible to diagnose the cancer at an early stage moreover treatment at an early stage reduces the mortality rate. B-mode ultrasound (US) imaging is very illustrious and reliable technique in early detection of masses in the breast. Though it is complimentary to the mammography, dense breast tissues can be examined more efficiently and detects the small nodules that are usually not observed in mammography. Segmentation of US images gives the clear understanding of nature and growth of the tumor. But some inherent artifact of US images makes this process difficult and computationally inefficient. Many methods are discussed in the literature for US image segmentation, each method has its pros and cons. In this paper, initially region merging based watershed and marker-controlled watershed transforms are discussed and implemented. In the subsequent sections we proposed a method for segmentation, based on clustering. Proposed method consists of three stages, in first stage probability images and its equalized histogram images are obtained from the original US images without any preprocessing. In the next stage, we used VQ based clustering technique with LBG, KPE and KEVR codebook generation algorithm followed by sequential cluster merging. Last stage is the post processing, where we removed unwanted regions from the selected cluster image by labeling the connected components and moreover used morphological operation for closing the holes in the final segmented image. Finally, results by our method are compared with initially discussed methods.

Spectral Subtractive-Type Algorithms for Enhancement of Noisy Speech: An Integrative Review

By Navneet Upadhyay Abhijit Karmakar

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2013.11.02, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2013

The spectral subtraction method is a classical approach for enhancement of speech degraded by additive background noise. The basic principle of this method is to estimate the short-time spectral magnitude of speech by subtracting estimated noise spectrum from the noisy speech spectrum. This is also achieved by multiplying the noisy speech spectrum with a gain function and later combining it with the phase of the noisy speech. Besides reducing the background noise, this method introduces an annoying perceptible tonal characteristic in the enhanced speech and affects the human listening, known as remnant musical noise. Several variations and implementations of this method have been adopted in past decades to address the limitations of spectral subtraction method. These variations constitute a family of subtractive-type algorithms and operate in frequency domain. The objective of this paper is to provide an extensive overview of spectral subtractive-type algorithms for enhancement of noisy speech. After the review, this paper is concluded by mentioning a future direction of speech enhancement research from spectral subtraction perspective.

ADCT-based Robust Methodology for Image Steganography

By Stuti Goel Arun Rana Manpreet Kaur

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2013.11.03, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2013

Steganography is an important area of research in recent years involving a number of applications. It is the science of embedding information into the cover image viz., text, video, and image (payload) without causing statistically significant modification to the cover image. The modern secure image steganography presents a challenging task of transferring the embedded information to the destination without being detected. In this paper, a DCT based robust methodology has been designed. The cover image is segmented into 8*8 blocks and DCT is applied on the image. The text to be hidden is embedded in the diagonal elements of the blocks by substituting a random variable in place of the bits of the text to be embedded. It is observed that the proposed algorithm is more robust with better CER & Normalized coefficient.

A Survey on PARATREE and SUSVD Decomposition Techniques and Their Use in Array Signal Processing

By Vineet Bhatt Sandeep Kumar

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2013.11.04, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2013

The present manuscript is intended to review few applications of tensor decomposition model in array signal processing. Tensor decomposition models like HOSVD, SVD and PARAFAC are useful in signal processing. In this paper we shall use higher order tensor decomposition in signal processing. Also, a novel orthogonal non-iterative tensor decomposition technique (SUSVD), which is scalable to arbitrary high dimensional tensor, has been applied in MIMO channel estimation. The SUSVD provides a tensor model with hierarchical tree structure between the factors in different dimensions. We shall use a new model known as PARATREE, which is related to PARAFAC tensor models. The PARAFAC and PARATREE both describe a tensor as a sum of rank-1 tensors, but PARATREE has several advantages over PARAFAC, when it is applied as a lower rank approximation technique. PARATREE is orthogonal, fast and reliable to compute, and the order of the decomposition can be adaptively adjusted. The low rank PARATREE approximation has been applied to measure noise suppression for tensor valued MIMO channel sounding measurements.

Content-based Search for Image Retrieval

By Mohamed M. Fouad

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2013.11.05, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2013

In this paper, a content-based image retrieval approach is presented for effective searching. The proposed approach uses two or more types of query for accessing images, textual annotation associated with images and visual appearance, such as colour, texture and positional features of objects in sample images. One can first place a keyword-based query, and then the desired images are retrieved by visual content-based query. The proposed retrieval approach shows clear improvements over competing approaches in terms of retrieval accuracy and visual inspection using Corel gallery and WWW images.

Lossy Compression Color Medical Image Using CDF Wavelet Lifting Scheme

By I.boukli hacene M. beladghem Bessaid Abdelhafid

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2013.11.06, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2013

As the coming era is that of digitized medical information, an important challenge to deal with is the storage and transmission requirements of enormous data, including color medical images. Compression is one of the indispensable techniques to solve this problem. In this work, we propose an algorithm for color medical image compression based on a biorthogonal wavelet transform CDF 9/7 coupled with SPIHT coding algorithm, of which we applied the lifting structure to improve the drawbacks of wavelet transform. In order to enhance the compression by our algorithm, we have compared the results obtained with wavelet based filters bank. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to traditional methods in both lossy and lossless compression for all tested color images. Our algorithm provides very important PSNR and MSSIM values for color medical images.

Video Analytic Algorithm for License Plate Recognition System

By Engr Ali Javed Huma Haider Usman Malik

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2013.11.07, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2013

Security has always been the most dominant factor in all domains of everyday life. Companies are spending more and more in this domain as security have become an international issue especially after war on terror era. Not only national departments have become victim of it but general public has also suffered a huge deal due to the lack of security measures in the recent past. This is one of the main reasonfor investment in this domain. From traffic monitoring and security purposes, a vehicle number plate recognition system can play a very useful role in monitoring the vehicle’s movement and consequently providing information about the vehicle. Different countries have their own system of issuing number plates. Similarly different algorithms are designed for number plate recognition in different countries. The proposed system constitutes an algorithm which is designed for the vehicles residing in Pakistan. Digital image processing techniques are the basis of the proposed system including the image enhancement and filtering techniques for noise and other weather effects reduction. Hough transform is used to segment the characters and consequently recognize the character. A very large data set has been used to test the system which shows quite immaculate results.

Performance Analysis of Non-Linear Equalizer in MIMO System for Vehicular Channel

By Vikash Kumar Tiwary Subham Agarwal Samarendra Nath Sur

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2013.11.08, Pub. Date: 8 Sep. 2013

All wireless technologies face the challenges of multipath signal fading, attenuation delay and phase delay which led to the interference between users and there is the possibility of limited spectrum. Linear and Non-Linear receiver is used to combat the effect of multipath signal fading and delay. The linear receiver gives best result in case of static environment but in case of dynamic environmental condition it fails to give better results and hence in order to improve the system performance non-linear receiver is used in dynamic environment condition. As a dynamic channel, Vehicular Channel model is considered because there is growing interest in vehicular networking and it is also a challenging channel model because of the complexity of the environment, and rapid variation in channel conditions. This paper studies the comparison between Zero Forcing (ZF) and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) receiver in the Vehicular Channel. A comparative study between linear equalizer and non-linear equalizer in the Vehicular Channel is done and analyze the effect of the varying modulation and antenna configuration on the performance.
