Cosine Modulated Non-Uniform Filter Bank with Improved Computational Efficiency

By Jyotsna v. Ogale Alok Jain

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2012.02.01, Pub. Date: 8 Mar. 2012

In this correspondence, a simple design method for multirate near perfect reconstruction (NPR) integer decimated filter bank with non-uniform frequency spacing and linear phase property, that involves optimization of only single parameter, is proposed. It is derived from the uniform cosine modulated filter bank (CMFB) by merging some relevant band pass filters. The design procedure and the structure of the uniform CMFB are mostly preserved in the non-uniform implementation. The parent filter of the filter bank is formulated as an interpolated finite impulse response (IFIR) filter. The IFIR digital filters permit efficient hardware implementations due to less number of multiplier coefficients. Design examples show that the proposed approach provides good performance with less computational complexity at the cost of slight increase in system delay.

Applying Quaternion Fourier Transforms for Enhancing Color Images

By M.I. Khalil

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2012.02.02, Pub. Date: 8 Mar. 2012

The Fourier transforms play a critical role in a broad range of image processing applications, including enhancement, analysis, restoration, and compression. Until recently, it was common to use the conventional methods to deal with colored images. These methods are based on RGB decomposition of the colored image by separating it into three separate scalar images and computing the Fourier transforms of these images separately. The computing of the Hypercomplex 2D Fourier transform of a color image as a whole unit has only recently been realized. This paper is concerned with frequency domain noise reduction of color images using quaternion Fourier transforms. The approach is based on obtaining quaternion Fourier transform of the color image and applying the Gaussian filter to it in the frequency domain. The filtered image is then obtained by calculating the inverse quaternion Fourier transforms.

A Technique for Image Encryption with Combination of Pixel Rearrangement Scheme Based On Sorting Group-Wise Of RGB Values and Explosive Inter-Pixel Displacement

By Amnesh Goel Nidhi Chandra

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2012.02.03, Pub. Date: 8 Mar. 2012

Encryption is used to prevent data from unauthorized access and with the appalling headway in network technology seen in the past decade; it has become the need of time to encrypt the images before sending over open network. Though researchers has proposed contrastive methods to encrypt images but correlation between pixels RGB value play a imperative part to guess for original image. So, here we introduce a new image encryption method which first rearranges the pixels within image on basis of RGB values and then forward intervening image for encryption. Experimentally it has shown that pixel rearrangement is enough from image encryption point of view but to send image over open network; inter-pixel displacement algorithm is applied to dispense more armament to image before transmission.

Chaotic Behavior of Heart Rate Signals during Chi and Kundalini Meditation

By Atefeh Goshvarpour Ateke Goshvarpour

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2012.02.04, Pub. Date: 8 Mar. 2012

Nonlinear dynamics has been introduced to the analysis of biological data and increasingly recognized to be functionally relevant. The aim of this study is to quantify and compare the contribution of nonlinear and chaotic dynamics of human heart rate variability during two forms of meditation: (i) Chinese Chi (or Qigong) meditation and (ii) Kundalini Yoga meditation. For this purpose, Poincare plots, Lyapunov exponents and Hurst exponents of heart rate variability signals were analyzed. In this study, we examined the different behavior of heart rate signals during two specific meditation techniques. The results show that heart rate signals became more periodic and their chaotic behavior was decreased in both techniques of meditation. Therefore, nonlinear chaotic indices may serve as a quantitative measure for psychophysiological states such as meditation. In addition, different forms of meditation appear to differentially alter specific components of heart rate signals.

Human Identification by Gait Using Corner Points

By Mridul Ghosh Debotosh Bhattacharjee

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2012.02.05, Pub. Date: 8 Mar. 2012

Recently human gait has become a promising and very important biometric for identification. Current research on gait recognition is usually based on an average gait image or a silhouette sequence, or a motion structure model. In this paper, the information about gait is obtained from the disparity on time and space of the different parts of the silhouette. This paper proposes a gait recognition method using edge detection, identification of corner points from edges, and selection of control points out of those corner points. Here, the images of moving human figures are subtracted from background by simple background modeling technique to obtain binary silhouettes. A gait signature of a person is taken as silhouette images of a complete gait cycle. A complete gait cycle is then divided into different frames in such a way that the information of the person’s gait style can be represented fully. One given unknown gait cycle is compared with stored gait cycles in terms of a cyclic distances between control points of an image of input gait cycle with that of corresponding image of the stored gait cycle. Experimental results show that our method is encouraging in terms of recognition accuracy.

Fuzzy Logic Based Three Step Search Algorithm for Motion Vector Estimation

By Suvojit Acharjee Sheli Sinha Chaudhuri

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2012.02.06, Pub. Date: 8 Mar. 2012

Motion compensation process is the most computationally expensive operation in the entire video compression process. Fast motion estimation technique plays a very important role in video compression standard. In Block Matching Algorithm Full Search Algorithm produces the best result for motion vector estimation. But Full Search algorithm is a time consuming and computationally expensive process. The Challenge is to reduce the computational complexity of Full Search algorithm without losing too much quality at the output.
In this paper we propose to implement the fuzzy logic based Three Step Search algorithm. This Algorithm performs better than the Three Step Search(TSS), New Three Step Search(NTSS), Four Step Search(FSS) algorithm.

Recurrence Plots of Heart Rate Signals during Meditation

By Ateke Goshvarpour Atefeh Goshvarpour

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2012.02.07, Pub. Date: 8 Mar. 2012

The current study analyses the dynamics of the heart rate signals during specific psychological states in order to obtain a detailed understanding of the heart rate patterns during meditation. In the proposed approach, heart rate time series available in Physionet database are used. The dynamics of the signals are then analyzed before and during meditation by examining the attractors in the phase space and recurrence quantification analysis. In general, the results reveal that the heart rate signals transit from a chaotic, highly-complex behavior before meditation to a low dimensional chaotic (and quasi-periodic) motion during meditation. This can be due to decreased nonlinear interaction of variables in meditation states and may be related to increased parasympathetic activity and increase of relaxation state. The results suggest that nonlinear chaotic indices may serve as a quantitative measure for psychophysiological states.

By Bhausaheb Shinde Dnyandeo Mhaske A.R. Dani

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijigsp.2012.02.08, Pub. Date: 8 Mar. 2012

In this work we taken different medical images like MRI, Cancer, X-ray, and Brain and calculated standard derivations and mean of all these medical images. To finding salt & pepper noise and then applied median filtering technique for removal of noise. After removing a noise by using median filtering techniques again standard derivations and mean are evaluated. This experimental analysis will improve the accuracy of MRI, Cancer, X-ray and Brain images for easy diagnosis. The results, which we have achieved, are more useful and they prove to be helpful for general medical practitioners to analyze the symptoms of the patients.
