A Novel Fixed-Point Simulation Library for the Design of FPGAs

By Bingyang Liu Xiaojun Zhang Zhenchao Chang Jing Liu

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijieeb.2010.01.01, Pub. Date: 8 Nov. 2010

Fixed-point simulation is extremely important in the design of fixed-point FPGAs. Float-point simulation is used to verify the arithmetic, while the fixed-point simulation is adopted to evaluate the performance and verify the implementation. The design of high-precision system based on FPGAs must focus on the fixed-point simulation to reduce the error acceptable even to zero. Basing on the analysis of fixed-point simulation approaches, especially the approach with MATLAB Fixed-Point Toolbox, we propose a novel fixed-point simulation library consisting of four modules. The library works under VC environment and its basic definition module imitates operating principle of MATLAB Fixed-Point Toolbox. The aim of library is to assit setting up fixed-point simulation conveniently, easily and quickly. Finally, simulation shows effect of the library.

A Method for Building a Mosaic with UAV Images

By Cheng Xing Jinling Wang Yaming Xu

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijieeb.2010.01.02, Pub. Date: 8 Nov. 2010

At present, satellite and aerial remote sensing are common ways to collect data for territorial resources monitoring in most countries, but they are not effective or rapid enough. Compared with traditional ways of obtaining images, the UAV based platform for photogrammetry and remote sensing is a more flexible and easy way to provide high-resolution images with lower cost. So building UAV based platforms is becoming a hot field throughout the whole world. However, there are also some problems with UAV images, e.g. the views of UAV images from UAV are smaller than those of traditional aerial images, so these images with small views should be pasted together in order to increase the visual field. Therefore, mosaicking UAV images is a critical task. The homographies between sequence images will be affected by the accumulated errors, which will lead to drifts of the position of each image in the mosaic. In this paper, we introduce a two-step optimization method for mosaicking UAV sequence images which can correct the homographies and improve the position of each image in the mosaic. Experimental results will also be presented.

Research on Feature Matching of Multi-pose Face Based on SIFT

By Yingjie Xia Yanbin Han Jinping Li Rui Chen

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijieeb.2010.01.03, Pub. Date: 8 Nov. 2010

Feature matching based on multi-pose faces has become more important in recent years. And it can be used in many fields, such as video monitoring, identity recognition, and so on. In this paper, SIFT algorithm is combined with AdaBoost algorithm, and a method of feature matching based on a multi-pose face is established. Firstly, the face region is extracted from multi-pose face images by AdaBoost. Secondly, SIFT characteristic vectors of the main regions are extracted and matched. The images of the ORL face DB are used in this paper, and some pictures taken in the experiment are used too. The matching results are acceptable and reasonable. Based on multi-pose face, it can be used to research face feature matching, face recognition, video monitoring and 3-D face reconstruction.

Comparison of Two Methods Basing on Artificial Neural Network and SVM in Fault Diagnosis

By Chunming Li Huiling Li

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijieeb.2010.01.04, Pub. Date: 8 Nov. 2010

Two diagnosis methods based on a neural network classifier and SVM are proposed for a pulse width modulation voltage source inverter. They are used to detect and identify the transistor open-circuit fault. BP neural network (BPNN) is capable of recognition. However, it has shortcomings obviously. These are just advantages of SVM, which has ability of global search. As an alternative to ANN, SVM can offer higher detection efficiency and reliability.

Echo Cancellation Research of Channel Estimation based on PN Sequence

By Yongqin Zhou Ming Ge Shuzhi Ji

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijieeb.2010.01.05, Pub. Date: 8 Nov. 2010

For the problem of estimation sequence effect on channel estimation accuracy and echo cancellation effect, this paper, based on the basic principle of echo cancellation, analyses the effect of PN sequence mechanism and the correlation on the channel estimation parameters. Comparing with using the input signal itself as the estimation sequence. With the input signal OFDM, the results of simulation and actual operation show that the method can increase both the accuracy of channel estimation and echo cancellation effect effectively.

Shape Design of Lifting body Based on Genetic Algorithm

By Yongyuan Li Yi Jiang Chunping Huang

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijieeb.2010.01.06, Pub. Date: 8 Nov. 2010

This paper briefly introduces the concept and history of lifting body, and puts forward a new method for the optimization of lifting body. This method has drawn lessons from the die line design of airplane is used to parametric numerical modeling for the lifting body, and extract the characterization of shape parameters as design variables, a combination of lifting body reentry vehicle aerodynamic conditions, aerodynamic heating, volumetric Rate and the stability of performance. Multi-objective hybrid genetic algorithm is adopted to complete the aerodynamic shape optimization and design of hypersonic lifting body vehicle when under more variable and constrained condition in order to obtain the Pareto optimal solution of Common Aero Vehicle shape.

By Shigang Wang Weitao Li

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijieeb.2010.01.07, Pub. Date: 8 Nov. 2010

We present a practical and novel approach to implement 3D scene walkthrough for air pollution visualization. This approach includes volume rendering and clipping methods, which are used to visualize large-scale air pollution data. A new viewpoint-based volume clipping method is used while rendering, which is fast and more interactive than previous methods. We achieved expected experimental results and our research could benefit environment monitoring and many other applications associated with pollution visualization.

Operator Design Methodology and Application in H.264 Entropy Coding

By Ziyi Hu Teng Wang Kuilin Chen Zheng Xie Xin.an Wang

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5815/ijieeb.2010.01.08, Pub. Date: 8 Nov. 2010

Currently ASIC applications, such as multimedia processing, require shorter time-to-market and lower cost of Non Recurring Engineering (NRE). Also, with the IC manufacturing technology developing continually, from transistor level to logic gate level, the size of design cells in digital circuits is increasing correspondingly. New design methodology is in urgent need to meet the requirement for the developing processing technology and shorter time-to-market in IC industry. This paper proposed the concepts and principles of operator design methodology, then focused on the entropy coding application based on the operators and finally presented the implementation results. The results show that with the proposed methodology, a comparable hardware performance can be obtained against the traditional standard cell based design flow. Furthermore, the design speed can be improved efficiently.
